Sometimes we find it necessary to report bad news. Camp American is a place we like to associate with both learning and fun- good times for both staff and students.
It is with a great sadness, though that I must report the passing of a man who helped start Camp American and was an indispensable part of it for many years.
Former Camp American Director Edward J. (“Ed”) Bomer went to the Lord on Friday August 22, 2014. He was an irreplaceable part of the Camp American experience as anyone who attended during his tenure can tell you. I can also tell you because I have had the privilege of trying (and failing miserably) to fill his shoes. Ed genuinely liked and respected young people and they returned that love and respect.
I first met Ed Bomer as a teenager attending another camp at which Ed was the director. I knew what Ed could do with younger people because I knew what he had done with me and with my camp friends. That was more than 40 years ago and Ed remained healthy, vigorous and fit until struck down by cancer, which he fought valiantly for several years, losing to the disease in the end but winning ultimately by being invited to meet and dwell with his Savior forever in paradise.
Never was a reward so richly deserved.
